Handicrafts Awards

Brief

Now in its 9th year, the annual UNESCO award of excellence in handicrafts, supports craft producers in improving their product design and marketing skills. The brief was to produce this years award logo. Once again the UNESCO brief asks for a non specific response in terms of geographic, cultural and religious aesthetics.

Response

I produced four variations for the brief. The first takes inspiration from the father of the arts and crafts movement, Wiliam Morris, looking at his wallpapers and floral decorations I produced a simplified version to form a circular boarder for the awards title.

The second concept is based upon the traditional award for victors - the laurel leaves. The laurel branches turn into a pair of hands in reference handicrafts.

The third design is a medley of various handicrafts. I wanted to produce a busy and detailed logo that would invite scrutiny.

The fourth design is a cross stitched number one. I wanted a simple and playful device, vibrant and fun, that would naturally reference success and handicrafts.
