Hot monocles

Brief

I successfully pitched for the CD artwork for the debut album of progressive rock group ‘Hot monocles’. The basis for the brief was centred around the album title ‘The medium and the message’ a theory posed by John Berger that the manner in which information is delivered is equal to and sometimes of greater importance than the message being delivered.

 

Response

Here is the rational that I submitted: “Hot Monocles cited the essay ‘The message and the medium’ which encapsulates their ethos. I
interpreted this as a means of viewing or perceiving the ordinary through a filter. I produced a
Kaleidoscope theme which sums up their perspective, the means of looking becomes more important than what is being viewed, which is

precisely what occurs when using a Kaleidoscope.”
I produced 3 variations on this theme and a separate theme that wasn’t chosen.
